BRIEF HISTORY
The California Museum opened in 1998 and was initially designed to showcase the materials of the State Archives. Over the last ten years the vision and mission have grown to make the Museum a destination place with a goal of educating and inspiring people about the richness that is California history. In 2005, First Lady Maria Shriver took on the role as Honorary Chairperson. With her leadership and that of the board, the Museum has gained the capacity to initiate and attract world-class exhibits.
MISSION
To engage, educate and enlighten a broad public audience about California history and its unique influence on the world of ideas, innovation, art and culture. Through captivating, active and state of the art experiences, the Museum seeks to inspire men, women and children to dream the California dream and dare to make their mark on history.
"It’s All About WE" MOVEMENT
Maria Shriver has transformed the role of First Lady, issuing calls to action that have resounded across the state and have transcended party, gender and economic lines. “It’s All About WE” is the overarching message for the movement led by Shriver. Through her innovative WE programs and initiatives, Shriver is inviting all Californians to find out what WE can do together when WE come together. “It’s All About WE” represents Shriver’s belief in the power of uniting people to communicate with each other, support each other, and create a positive legacy in their own lives, in their communities, in their state – and beyond.
The California Museum is the WE Inspire program of the "It's All About WE" movement.
EDUCATION
A core program of The California Museum is civic education. A special focus is placed on serving the young people who will become the voters, decision makers and leaders of California in this new millennium.
