A MESSAGE FROM MARIA

A Message from First Lady, Maria Shriver

When I first came to Sacramento, no one was telling the stories of the trailblazers and risk-takers who are California’s remarkable women. And with California being home to extraordinary people who have dared to dream and in doing so have made an incredible mark on the history of state and the world, it was shocking that not a single place honors and recognizes our California legends.

But that was then.

I decided to join the Museum as its honorary co-chair when I first became first lady because I knew there was a story to be told within these great walls and beyond. We have an extraordinary opportunity here at the Museum and I truly believe that It's Up To WE and that together WE Inspire all Californians to dream, and dream big.

Today, I am proud to see how the Museum continues to grow into the institution it is today. This is a Museum, that tells not only the story of women and legendary Californians, but of all the diverse groups in California that make up its bright cultural patchwork that is our state. This is a Museum where history comes to life in innovative exhibits and extraordinary programs.

Here at the Museum, we have a motto, “Only in California.” Only in California could you find the dreamers who make their marks on the world that can’t be erased. These aren’t dreams that vanish just as quickly as they are created. These are the dreams that save lives, create beauty, lead social movements and pioneer advancements destined to lead the world.

The California Museum and its projects have much in store for us in the following years. The California Hall of Fame will continue to recognize legendary Californians, but in new formats, expanded exhibit space and possibly travel around the state making the institution more accessible to all people. The Museum also has plans for gallery renovations and to create programs that continue to spark discussion and engage Californians of all ages.

I look forward to what we can achieve together.

Only in California. Only at The California Museum.

Warm regards,
Maria Shriver
