VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Become a Volunteer

Having fun, gaining experience, and helping a good cause are all reasons to volunteer at The California Museum. All volunteers receive a free membership, discounts in the Museum store and lots of opportunities to attend Museum events.

Museum Guide

Department: Education

Duties:

The Museum schedules self-guided school groups Monday-Friday throughout the day. Volunteers greet groups as they enter the Museum, give a brief interpretive talk about the Museum’s largest exhibit, Constitution Wall, and orient groups to the Museum’s layout and rules. While in the galleries, volunteers assist groups with activity sheets and hands-on activities, monitor behavior, and interact with diverse audiences. Volunteers are vital members of the Time of Remembrance and 31st Star educational programs. There are also occasional weekend family programs and other events for Museum volunteers to assist with.

Requirements:

  • The desire to share your knowledge of California history and culture with others
  • The ability to be flexible and to work well with other volunteers and Museum staff
  • Must be dependable. Volunteers are expected to arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled tour, not cancel unless there is an emergency, and give staff ample notification for time off.
  • The ability to commit three hours a week.

Benefits:

  • Free membership
  • A training program provided by the education staff
  • A 10% discount in the Museum Store on all non-sale items
  • Mileage to and from the Museum may be used for tax deduction
  • Opportunities to attend special Museum events
  • Recognition at an annual event for volunteers
  • Reimbursement for parking and RT transportation
  • Free admission for you and a guest
  • A museum shirt
