Immigration
- Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation has teacher and educator resource guides for learning about Angel Island and immigration to California.
- Angel Island Immigrant Journeys of Chinese-Americans tell their stories about why they immigrated to the United States.
- Weedpatch Camp was a camp set up in the Central Valley for families who migrated to California during the Dust Bowl.
National Parks
- California has numerous National Parks, Monuments, and Historic Sites. This website is an excellent resource to the educational components of these areas.
- The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park gives background on the maritime past in San Francisco and California.
- The Rosie the Riveter National Historical Park represents the large industry of ship and wartime defense building that occurred in California, and specifically in the San Francisco bay area during WWII.
- The Library of Congress has historical resources for teachers and their students.
- Teaching With Historic Place gives information and lessons on teaching about various historic places, which are numerous in California.
Latinas
- The Latino Museum focuses on contemporary Latino artists and their impact on society
- Ellen Ochoa was the first Latina woman in Space. She completed four NASA space flight missions.
- Judith Baca is one of the nations leading muralists. She helped create The Great Wall of Los Angeles mural with over 400 youth during 1976-1984.
- France Cordova was the first woman chief scientist. She also was the first Latina to head a University of California campus at U.C. Riverside
- Luisa Moreno was a social activist and an early leader in rights for laborers.
California History and Information
- The California State Library website is a great source for learning about California’s official state symbols.
- California is home to many state historic parks and museums.
- Learn about our state’s flag and it’s creation.
- The Oakland Museum of California has resources and online exhibits about the state and its history.
- The Society of California Pioneers has a searchable database with historical information and photographs.
- The California Historical Society has resources and teacher education packets for history lessons.
- LearnCalifornia.org offers a wide variety of resources relating to California history.
- The Virtual Museum of San Francisco is full of primary documents that tell the story of California and San Francisco.
Time of Remembrance
- The Japanese American National Museum’s website has online programs and kid’s games.
- PBS dedicated a website to telling the details of the Japanese internment camps during WWII from the children’s points of view.
- Now a National Historic Site, Manzanar was one of the War Relocation Centers for the Japanese during WWII.
- The Time of Remembrance program, supported by the Elk Grove Unified School District, is a great resource for information about the Japanese American interment. There are photo galleries, lesson plans, and oral histories.
Gold Rush
- The Sacramento Bee features resources about the gold rush in California.
- This is an online exhibit about the California Gold Rush.
- PBS’s website on the Gold Rush includes teacher guides, timelines, and maps.
- The California State Parks offers information about parks related to the gold rush.
