“Gambatte! Legacy of an Enduring Spirit” at the California Museum is a project that’s both professional and personal for Bee photographer Paul Kitagaki Jr. Informed by the Japanese concept of gambatte – or triumph over adversity – the new exhibit juxtaposes historic images of Japanese Americans interned during WWII with contemporary photos of the same individuals (or their descendants) by Kitagaki, whose own family had been photographed awaiting relocation in 1942.
Shot using equipment similar to that used by the previous photographers, Kitagaki’s images capture the passage of time and the perseverance of his subjects. (1020 O St., Sacramento)
