California Missions Field Trip Tour
Available year-round

As of March 13, 2020, all group tours are canceled until further notice during our COVID-19 temporary closure. Although reservations for future tour dates may be submitted, we are unable to guarantee future dates for group tours due to restrictions from the California Department of Public Health.

In lieu of onsite field trip tours, California’s Journey Virtual Tour is available for distance learning during the 2020-21 school year. Visit tour page for details.

The California Missions Field Trip Tour chronicles the history of the 21 outposts founded by missionaries along the El Camino Real, providing students with a comprehensive overview of the state’s transformation from a Spanish outpost to a thriving frontier on the verge of U.S. statehood.

Includes pre- and post-visit curriculum, 25-minute docent-led classroom presentation on the history of the Mission system and its impact on Native peoples, followed by completion of an activity sheet and a self-guided tour of “California Indians” and “California Missions.” Aligned with 4th grade History-Social Science and Common Core ELA.
