Free admission to view the original 1849 California Constitution and all current exhibits will be offered in observance of Constitution Day, a federal holiday honoring the 1787 signing of the U.S. Constitution that recognizes all who are born in the U.S. or have become U.S. citizens through naturalization.
On loan from the California State Archives, California’s original 1849 Constitution is rarely on public display due to preservation concerns and is normally stored in a high-security vault. Hand-written on parchment paper and published in both English and Spanish, the document was adopted at the California Constitutional Convention October 10, 1849 and ratified November 13, 1849. California was admitted as the 31st state in the Union September 9, 1850.
Media are invited to apply for credentials to cover the public viewing by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, via email to email@example.com.
